Experimental and Numerical Investigations on the Effect of MWCNT-COOH and Al2O3 Hybrid Nanofillers Dispersed CFRP Laminates Subjected to Projectile Impact

Although carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites have excellent intrinsic mechanical properties, they are vulnerable to impact loads because of their weak inter-laminar fracture toughness, which results in delamination damage. This study presents a novel hybrid nanofiller combination multi-walled nanotubes (MWCNT) and alumina nanoparticles (Al2O3) determine improvements the resistance CFRP laminate. The projectile experimental is carried out on 140 mm × 1.5 laminate with spherical conical nose shape projectiles. numerical test plate consisting six layers performed, each layer modeled using shell element connected through tiebreak contact. Using Cowper–Symonds equation dynamic validation established considering strain rate effect. results, such as residual velocity, damage area, ballistic limit velocity obtained from analysis, compared observations. In laminates nanofillers, decreased by 20% 9% when projectiles were impacted, respectively. indicates that 0.1 wt% MWCNT + 1 Al2O3 concentration embedded offers better against impact.
